Parrots are loud, social animals. Most sounds are normal communication — the skill is learning which call means what, and when a change in vocalisation signals a problem.

The dawn and dusk "flock call"

In the wild, parrots call at sunrise and sunset to gather the flock. At home this becomes a loud, rhythmic calling session, often just after you wake up or before bed. This is healthy species-typical behaviour, not misbehaviour. Answer it calmly, and it will usually settle.

The contact call: "come back"

When you leave the room and the bird calls once or twice, it is checking that the flock is still there. A calm single reply — "I'm here" — reassures it. If you reward the call with excitement or panic, it learns to call more often. Our Call Analyzer lets you record and inspect these calls locally, so you can compare them over time.

The alarm or warning call

A sharp, repeated, high-pitched shriek at something specific — a predator sighting, a new object, a person the bird distrusts — is an alarm. Look at what it is looking at. Remove the trigger if you can, and give the bird time; don't force it toward the scary thing.

Begging sounds

Young birds and bonded adults make soft, nasal, repetitive begging sounds near food, near you, or near the bowl. It means "I want food / attention". Respond with the appropriate amount — don't reinforce non-stop begging with constant feeding.

The low rumble and contentment sounds

A soft purr, gentle grinding, or quiet warble often means the bird is relaxed and happy — for example while preening or being gently scratched. In a few species, a sharper, rising growl can mean "back off"; combine the sound with posture before reacting.

When vocalisation itself is a warning

A sudden change in voice — a hoarse, weak, or silent bird — can signal respiratory infection or throat irritation. Note the difference between "different mood" and "different body".

  • Hoarse or weak voice lasting more than a day.
  • Clicking, wheezing or tail bobbing when breathing.
  • A once-loud bird that goes completely quiet and fluffed.
  • Screaming that starts out of nowhere and never stops.

Track sounds with our Sound Board and a simple daily note, so changes are obvious to you and your vet.

What not to do about screaming

  1. Yelling back — it rewards the behaviour.
  2. Covering the cage for hours out of frustration.
  3. Giving treats the instant it screams to "make it stop".
  4. Ignoring a sudden, unexplained change in the voice.

FAQ

How loud is "too loud" for a parrot?

Large parrots can be surprisingly loud; dawn calls are normal. A useful rule: if screaming is continuous, new, or tied to a specific trigger, investigate the cause rather than the volume.

My bird only screams when I'm on a call — why?

It wants attention back. A quick, calm "hello" and a pre-planned quiet-time routine usually reduces this faster than scolding.

Do parrots learn to manipulate with sound?

They learn which sounds get a response. That is normal learning, not manipulation. The goal is to reward quiet and calm behaviour, not only loud demands.
