Your parrot is always talking — it just rarely uses words. Learning to read body language is the fastest way to a happy, trusting relationship.

Read the whole picture, not one cue

No single gesture means the same thing in every context. A raised crest can be curiosity or fear depending on the rest of the body. Always combine head, eyes, posture, wings and voice. When you are unsure, give the bird space and watch what it does next.

The head and crest

Cockatiels and cockatoos wear their mood on their crest: fully raised = surprise or curious attention; smoothly flattened back = fear or warning; relaxed and upright = comfortable. A tilted head means it is trying to see or listen more clearly. Slow head bobbing in a young bird is usually begging or excitement; repeated bobbing in an adult deserves attention.

The eyes: pinning and staring

When the pupils rapidly shrink and enlarge, parrots are "pinning". This can mean excitement about a treat, focused curiosity, overstimulation, or anger just before a bite. Watch whether the wings are slightly raised or the body leans forward — those tell you which emotion it is.

The tail

A tail fanned or wagged slowly can mean contentment or play. But a tail that bobs up and down with every breath, especially when the bird sits fluffed, is a red flag for breathing trouble and should trigger a same-day vet visit. Flipping the tail up to expose the vent is often a sign of hormonal behaviour.

The wings and body posture

Wings held slightly away from the body and a leaning-forward posture often mean "I am ready to move" — to fly, to play or to lunge. Wings drooping low, especially with fluffed feathers and closed eyes, means the bird is cold, tired or unwell. A bird lying on the cage floor is an emergency.

The beak and feathers

Grinding the beak before sleep is a content, self-soothing sound. Preening in your presence means the bird feels safe. But feathers that are constantly fluffed, missing patches, or deliberate plucking away from the body are not normal — see our Health Checklist for a structured way to track changes over time.

How to practise reading your bird

  • Spend five quiet minutes a day just watching, no handling.
  • Note what happens right before and after a gesture — context is everything.
  • Record changes in a simple log; new behaviour is more meaningful than everyday behaviour.
  • Pair cues with sound: our Call Analyzer helps you notice when vocalisations shift.

Common misreadings

  1. Treating a frightened, flattened-crest bird as friendly and reaching in to pet it.
  2. Thinking pinning pupils are always cute excitement, missing an impending bite.
  3. Ignoring tail-bobbing because "it only does it sometimes".
  4. Punishing a bird for body language it cannot control.

FAQ

Why does my parrot regurgitate for me?

Regurgitation is a feeding, courtship and bonding behaviour. It means strong affection — or strong hormonal urges. Reduce it by limiting petting to the head and neck, and see a vet if it becomes frequent.

Is regurgitation the same as vomiting?

No. Regurgitation is deliberate and usually brings up partly processed food calmly; vomiting is forceful, messy and a medical emergency.

My bird fluffs up and shakes — is that sick?

A quick fluff-and-shake is normal stretching. Sitting fluffed for hours, especially with closed eyes, is not.
